Effective Horse Training
Much like any type of training, Horse Training is most effective through repetition and reinforcement. There are as many different methods to horse training as there are horses, but the fact remains that the horse and the handler are never the same; there is never one recipe that will work exactly the same way every time. Both horses and people have different personalities. Even the same horse and the same handler can be different from day to day. The only way for an effective horse training method to work effectively is for the horse trainer to recognizes these changes, and adapt from day to day; and through much repetition and reinforcement of the training methods.
My primary training goal is to allow the horse to feel relaxed and attentive, this is key. A horse will not respond to training effectively if they are tense, or if they feel intimidated. A horse has to be confident that you are in control, and that you are not a threat to him. Every methodology of horse training must embrace this initial principal.
Horses respond well to patterns. If you teach a horse that every time you take him into the pen he's going to get to run and play, he's going to start to anticipate that. Every time he sees you, he will explode with energy. What you want instead, is to have him fell relaxed, safe, and comfortable every time he sees you. You want him to become familiar with you, and to trust you; then your training will be effective.
